View your favoritesVaanya is most often read as ‘of the forest’, through Sanskrit vanyā, the feminine of a word meaning ‘of the forest’ or ‘wild’; that form, however, has a shorter opening vowel than वान्या. Russian Vanya, a familiar form of Ivan, is a separate naming route. The sources do not establish which, if either, explains the Indian name, so the forest sense is the popular reading while ‘gift of God’ and similar interpretations have no support here.
No dictionary entry documents this spelling with that sense, so the meaning above is the one families use, not a dictionary definition. How we use sources.
वान्या is read vaan-yaa, in two syllables with long vowels. Vanya is another spelling and also belongs to the Russian name; Vaniya may suggest an extra syllable. Keep n and y together in the two-syllable reading. The proposed Sanskrit form vanyā has a short opening vowel.
Also spelled Vanya, Vaniya.
