View your favoritesKaran is connected with Sanskrit karaṇa, whose recorded senses include ‘skilful’ or ‘clever’ and ‘helper’ or ‘companion’. Wiktionary derives the word from a root meaning ‘to do’ or ‘make’. The spelling matters: करण is a different word from कर्ण, Karna, the warrior in the Mahabharata. Similar Roman forms should not be used to transfer the epic association automatically to this derivation.

करण is read ka-ran in Hindi, in two syllables. Karann is another Roman spelling. The n is made with the tongue curled back. The epic name कर्ण has r directly before n, without the intervening vowel of करण, so its native-script spelling is a useful distinction.
Also spelled Karann.
