View your favoritesIsha means ‘ruler’, following Sanskrit vocabulary for power and rule. Wiktionary and Monier-Williams record īśā with senses of faculty, power and dominion, while the related īśa means ‘lord’ or ‘ruler’ and can refer to Shiva. The cited Sanskrit entry does not identify īśā itself as a goddess's name, so the feminine divine interpretation found in name lists should be distinguished from the direct dictionary meaning.

ईशा is read ee-shaa, in two syllables with long vowels. Eesha makes the first vowel's length explicit, and Ishaa marks the ending. The sh is a familiar approximation for the Sanskrit consonant. Aisha has a different Arabic origin and should not be treated as a spelling of Isha.
Also spelled Eesha, Ishaa.
The related word īśa appears in the opening of the Isha Upanishad, whose name comes from that opening invocation of the Lord. This provides a literary and philosophical connection, without making every form in the word family a separate divine name.
