View your favoritesGurpreet is a Punjabi compound understood as ‘love of the Guru’. Its parts are documented separately: preet means ‘love’ or ‘attachment’, and guru can mean a teacher, sage or enlightener. In Sikh usage, Guru has a specific religious meaning. The whole-name interpretation follows those components rather than a separate dictionary definition. Gurpreet is used for both boys and girls, and its meaning is best understood with the intended cultural context in mind.

ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰੀਤ in Gurmukhi and गुरप्रीत in Devanagari are read gur-preet, in two syllables. Gurprit is an alternative spelling. The u is short, like that in ‘put’, while ee is long. Keep p and r together rather than inserting a vowel between them.
Also spelled Gurprit.
In Sikh tradition, Guru refers to the ten historical Gurus and to the Guru Granth Sahib as the continuing Guru. Names beginning Gur- draw on that relationship, while preet also appears in Punjabi names such as Manpreet and Harpreet.
