View your favoritesAtharv is associated with the Atharvaveda, the fourth Veda, and with Sanskrit atharvan, a priest concerned with fire and Soma rites. Wiktionary records Atharv as a Hindi given name and the Vedic text as a meaning of the Hindi word. The Sanskrit entry also identifies the sage Atharvan. These priestly and scriptural connections are the clearest basis for understanding the name; its deeper linguistic origin is uncertain.

अथर्व is read a-tharv in the shorter form Atharv, while Atharva keeps a final vowel: a-thar-va. The th is a t made near the teeth with a puff of breath, comparable to the t-h sequence in ‘hothouse’. It differs from English th in ‘think’ or ‘this’.
Also spelled Atharva.
The Atharvaveda contains hymns, healing charms and domestic rites, and is attributed to Atharvan and his lineage. A Rigvedic verse cited by Wiktionary already names Atharvan as an ancestral priest, connecting the name with an older priestly tradition as well as the fourth Veda.
