View your favoritesAnanya means ‘unique’ or ‘matchless’, from Sanskrit ananya. Wiktionary explains the underlying word as ‘not other’ and records meanings including ‘undivided’, ‘sole’ and ‘without equal’. The feminine name ananyā adds a long final vowel and is recorded in Hindi. Its meanings span both being without an equal and being wholly directed toward something. This second sense gives the word a place in devotional language, alongside its use as a personal name.

अनन्या is read a-nan-yaa, in three syllables with a long final vowel. Ananyaa makes that ending explicit; Anannya also appears. Keep n and y together in the last syllable. The underlying adjective अनन्य has a short final vowel, a distinction that the Roman spelling Ananya does not show.
Also spelled Ananyaa.
In the Bhagavad Gita, ananya describes undivided devotion. The expression ananya-bhakti refers to devotion directed wholly toward the divine, and the word continues in Vaishnava devotional language and bhakti poetry.
